피타고라스의 정리에 따르면 $a = \sqrt{x^2 + z^2}$이다.

[그림 1.8] 피타고라스의 정리를 두 번 적용하면 3차원 벡터의 길이를 구할 수 있다.
$$ \hat{\mathbf{u}} = \frac{\mathbf{u}}{\Vert{}\mathbf{u}\Vert{}} = \left(\frac{x}{\Vert{}\mathbf{u}\Vert{}}, \frac{y}{\Vert{}\mathbf{u}\Vert{}}, \frac{z}{\Vert{}\mathbf{u}\Vert{}}\right) $$
<aside> 💡
예 1.3
벡터 $\mathbf{v} = (-1, 3, 4)$를 정규화해 보자.
$\Vert{}\mathbf{u}\Vert{} = \sqrt{(−1)^2 + 3^2 + 4^2} = \sqrt{26}$이다. 따라서 $\hat{\mathbf{v}} = \frac{\mathbf{v}}{\Vert{}\mathbf{v}\Vert{}} = {\left(\frac{-1}{\sqrt{26}}, \frac{3}{\sqrt{26}}, \frac{4}{\sqrt{26}}\right)}$이다.
$\hat{v}$가 실제로 단위벡터인지를 그 길이를 계산해서 확인해 보면 다음과 같다.
$$ \Vert{}\hat{\mathbf{v}}\Vert{} = \sqrt{\left( \frac{-1}{\sqrt{26}}\right)^2 + \left(\frac{3}{\sqrt{26}} \right)^2 + \left(\frac{4}{\sqrt{26}}\right)^2} = \sqrt{\frac{1}{26} + \frac{9}{26} + \frac{16}{26}} = \\[1em] \sqrt{1} = 1 $$
